If you use Photoshop then the core interface elements of Pixelmator image manipulation software will be familiar to you. The tools and menus are very similar, but what makes Pixelmator different is the graphic look and feel. The menus are slightly transparent and this focuses the user on the image being edited.
The software is only available for the Mac and has been designed to use features of that computers graphics processor.
There are a large number of export options, however the RAW format is not included in this first version and this will probably be viewed as a significant omission.
Some of the filters are different to Photoshop and have an animation feature that may be useful for creating transitions. Another unique feature is the ability to import from an iSight camera directly into a layer. The layer blending options are pretty much the same as Photoshops.
The photo browser feature looks as if it will have some potential, but is currently limited to viewing images in the iPhoto and Pictures folders.
The software can be downloaded at the Pixelmator web site.

Flash on the Beach this year is from 4th to 7th November, in Brighton, UK. Seems like an odd time of year to have a conference near a beach? There are a lot of speakers attending the event, an obvious well known name on the list is Neville Brody, but if you are in the Flash crowd you'll probably know more names.
Tickets are still available at time of posting this news item. More info at the event site. |

The Bergen Electronic Music and Art Festival takes place on August 31 and Sept 1st. The Ekko web site has a very cool Flash based program of events. Although such an interface isn't unusual, this particular design is something worth having a look at. |
