Written by Edina Nasseri
Tuesday, 25 November 2008

On November 3, a student from Greenwich High School (could be the future Scorsese) wrote directly to Steve Jobs explaining that he wanted to purchase Final Cut Studio Pro but was lacking in the funds to do so. And 2 weeks later, his xmas came early as he received straight from Cupertino exactly what he asked for…free of charge.

Included is the letter written to Steve.

Don’t you feel all fuzzy and warm towards Steve Jobs now!

Sunforce Scares the Ghosts Away PDF Print E-mail
Written by Edina Nasseri
Friday, 21 November 2008

Today it's all about big, bigger, biggest. From houses, cars, electronics, buildings, certain body parts (*ahem*) and the list goes on and on.

Sunforce jumps right on the bandwagon by introducing their mega bright torch light. Looking at it and its 35 watt HID bulb and 12 Volt 7Ah battery, it has the brightness capacity of 40 million candles. Which means that when the zombie apocalypse comes, we'll be able to see what we're shooting in the dead of night. It also has a function for emergency signal lights!

Yeah so now calling it a torch light seems a little silly. I think portable flood light would be more appropriate. But then again, from the specifications found on their website (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200361824&R=200361824), I don't think the product is that portable. And as expected for the amount of light it emits, the battery will only last for 40 minutes. But the good thing (perhaps) is that it can be recharged via ac of dc power.

Tim Burton Again PDF Print E-mail
Written by Edina Nasseri
Thursday, 20 November 2008

What do Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Sheen, Mia Wasikowska, Matt Lucas, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman have in common? Well, they will all be starring in the new Tim Burton movie Alice In Wonderland. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/)

By the by, apparently Lindsay Lohan was supposed to play the leading role but lost out to Australian actress Mia Wasikowska for some apparent reason.

Slated to be released in picture houses on March 5, 2010, the film is rumoured to be visually stunning employing live action footage, CGI and performance capture imagery.

Ghetto Cool for Bad Financial Times - CupSpeakers PDF Print E-mail
Written by Edina Nasseri
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

My father was looking around for a set of portable IPod speakers which were also affordable.

It just so happened that I stumbled across this article about the CupSpeakers created by Dmitry Zagga. I just love its simplistic feel and the fact that there is no electronics involved in the whole set up. Pretty cool, isn’t it.

The system features your humble paper cup, some toothpicks and a set of IPod earphones. The earphones go through the base of the cup which is horizontal (see picture).  You may be asking, “…but how…” Of course the sound won’t be comparable to ‘proper’ speakers but Zagga claims that the sound increase is measurable. Must be due to the shape of the paper cups.

Anyone having some free time and extra paper cups should try this one out.

Cats Are King Among Men PDF Print E-mail

If you own cats (or in some cases the other way around) then you should be very familiar with what James Huggins has to say in his Guidelines for Cats (http://www.jamesshuggins.com/h/hum1/guidelines_for_cats.htm). I was reading through it and found myself nodding and agreeing with it.

Because we all want to understand our cat’s, the guideline has been written from a cat’s point of view (of course) it’s quite hilarious and excellent for boring rainy days when you have nothing better to do.

A Cool Case of Vampirism PDF Print E-mail
Written by Edina Nasseri
Friday, 14 November 2008

Hard to believe that vampires existed…but they do. Well at least they did in the 1800’s.

The Jimmy Pippen estate sale which was held from the 3 to 4 October at the Natchez Convention Centre saw the sale of a beautiful vampire hunting kit dating back to the 1800’s. The kit comes in a handsome American walnut case packed with stakes, mirrors, crucifixes, a Bible, holy water, candles and not forgetting the essential garlic.

Well, it’s easy to see that someone still believes that the bloodsuckers are just waiting for an opportune time to rise from their dark, damp coffins and begin world domination...the item fetched $14,850.00 and was bought by a private individual whose name was noted as Dr. V. H. Elsing

Bye Bye DHL USA PDF Print E-mail
Written by Edina Nasseri
Tuesday, 11 November 2008

Soon, the USA will have to depend solely on FedEx, UPS or the US Postal Service for domestic shipping services. Why? Because German shipping giant Deutsche Post will be axing about 9,500 jobs at its DHL Express operations.

Due to the global economic crisis, DHL will stop its services on January 30 next year. From February onwards, DHL has stated that their workforce will consist only about 4,000 to 5,000 people. Furthermore, after this date, the number of their branch offices would have fallen from 412 to 103, these mainly located in metropolitan areas of the USA. Analysts however, all agree that this pull out will greatly benefit DHL’s rivals. David Ross from Stifell Nicolaus & Co expects a 4% growth in volume for UPS because of this move by DHL.

The company, based in Bonn, has already had to cut 5,400 jobs in Germany itself. Add this to the $1.5 billion that would be lost due to the restructuring of DHL’s US Express business and the picture isn’t a pretty one. In spite of all this, DHL is confident that next year, losses shouldn’t exceed $900 million (GAG).
