After being infected with rabies in August, an eight year old girl lies in a coma that was induced by doctors to put her symptoms on hold. During the time it took her parents to take her on foot from their rural home to a hospital in Bolivar, she never received any vaccine that would have prevented the virus from mutating into a full blown rabies infection. According to Doctor Yolanda Caicedo who is treating the survivor, also an infectious disease specialist from the Hospital Universatario del Valle in Cali Colombia, the fact that she was able to withstand the spread of the virus for such a long time is a miracle.
Ideally, a vaccine is administered as soon as possible. The 5 shots contain little amounts of the dead rabies virus. It is hoped that this will force the body to develop antibodies to fight the virus. Patients are also given a dose of immunoglobulin which in this case is a synthesised rabies antibody. This is to protect them whilst their immune systems are busy producing antibodies to the vaccine virus. However, this is only effective if administered within 6 days of the infection. The coma was induced in this particular patient because when the symptoms finally did show up, it was already too late for other preventive measures.
This girl isn’t the first to survive so long after being infected. Jeanna Giese is still very much alive after being infected almost 4 years ago. Now 19 years old, she is the first person to have survived the infection without even a single shot of vaccine! When you think about cancer treatment, you think about chemotherapy. But Phillips may soon be changing all that with their Micro Bubbles.
This is a new drug delivery system which uses ultrasound technology. The ultrasound locates the cancerous cells and the Micro Bubbles are dispatched to that location in the body. Drugs to eliminate the cancer is then released from the bubbles. This would reduce the side effects caused by chemotherapy as the strong drugs only attack the cancer rather than affecting the entire body. Currently, if this comes into being, Phillips claims that this would make cancer treatment less invasive. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site |

Scientists at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain claim that noise pollution caused by commercial and military ships are causing whales to die because it disrupts their ability to migrate, feed and breed.
Michel Andre, director of the Laboratory of Applied Bio-Acoustics in Barcelona termed this 'air smog' claiming that if air pollution affects their field of vision, then noise pollution could drastically educe the zones in which whales feed.
Carl Gustav Landin, Head of of Marine Programmes for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added that some forms of noise pollution is so devastating that it can shock marine life to death. This includes whales and the smaller sea life they prey on for food. Sonars used by both the military and oil industries can exceed 230 decibels and within a one or two km radius, this exposure could be fatal.
Together with the effects of climate change, if this problem is not remedied, scientists predict that in a few years time these giant marine creatures could very well be teetering on the brink of extinction. Did you hear the one about the pyramid in Paris? No not the Pei pyramid at the Louvre but the other one.
Well, Paris council has revealed that by 2012, they will have a 50 storey glass pyramid in the city of love. This comes right after they voted to drop the ban on high rise buildings. Ironically, the building will be the third tallest in the city by the time it is completed.
The 590 feet high pyramid will be built by the same architecture firm that designed the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, Herzog & de Meuron. It will house offices, a conference centre, restaurants, cafes and a 400 bedroom hotel. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site |

Things are looking up for people who wear prostheses especially prostheses hands as soon they may be able to ‘feel’ again. These bionic hands have gelled fingertips which could also help wearers grasp objects.
Humans have in built reflexes which work (excuse the pun) hand in hand with vibrations. In the case of the bionic hands, the top part consists of a rubber skin which is filled with a thick layer of silicon gel. The theory is that if an object should slip through the bionic hands’ grasp, then the skin will transmit vibrations through the gel and to acoustic sensors. This will provide immediate feedback and motors within the bionic hand will tighten its grip to ‘catch’ the object. On the other hand, the fingers are covered in fine electrodes which change the electric conduction in order to allow the user to ‘feel’ how much pressure they are applying to any one object.

The thing about holograms is that you only see them in the movies. That’s because we haven’t really figured out how to make true 3D holograms which don’t require you to wear special glasses to be able to experience.
However, researchers at the University of Arizona’s Optical Sciences Department have put one giant step forward in making this holographic dream a reality. They have successfully created an image that ‘refreshes’. Which means to say that the hologram can be completely erased and rewritten in minutes.
The problem with this is that if we wanted to show motion using holograms, the refresh rate would have to be several times a second. I can see how this would be beneficial to for example, architecture and medical sectors. But perhaps the scope would be less for movies and films, depending on what you’re watching.

I think we've all been guilty of this one before. Some perhaps more than others. The term is 'communifaking' [Definition: an act of pretending to be on your phone. Either calling, texting or surfing the web when in actual fact you're faking it].
Yup, I think there are many out there just nodding right now. The reasons for doing this are many. You could be avoiding conversation with strange people who are trying out corny chat up lines on you. Or you could be steering away from 'familiar' people at wedding receptions and get-togethers. If saying what was on your mind was acceptable then this would not be necessary. But for the sake of family relations and world peace, you grab your mobile and just pretend.
Researchers (yeah they did a study on this) claim that 43% of adult women compared to 32% of adult men communifake now and then. And not forgetting the 74% of 18-24 year old's who do it too. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site |

Droool…the new Jaguar motorbike is set to stalk the streets pretty soon…and I’m pretty much lost for words. Designed by the art engineer (http://www.leejrowland.com/) Lee J. Rowland, this new concept bike is set to stun. Lee J. Rowland, if you didn’t already know, has been designing and building gorgeous super bikes with yet another big name, Barend Hemmes.
This particular Jaguar bike has a 1200 cc Buell 97 S3 Thunderbolt engine. Because of its unique design, both the intake and exhaust systems have been modified to suit its shape. The bike is relatively light as it is built using fibreglass. Not to be over the top, but the seats are covered by Stingray too! Now for the serious part: the cost. To own one of these you would have to fork up £290,000 which would also buy you a customised CAT 1 license plate. MEOOW!

The 3rd Space Vest was premiered at the E for All Expo in Los Angeles from October 3 to October 5. Released by TN Games, the vest allows video gamers to feel what their on screen avatars ‘feel’. Specifically developed for the World of Warcraft games, you can now feel what it would be like to be kicked and punched, or even feel the effects of magical spells and environmental effects on the body. Other games are adopting this technology too; such as Call of Duty 2, Quake 4 and BioShock. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site |
