I stopped drinking Coke and other soda’s years ago for health and political reasons. But sometimes I do get a small craving for it, although I have never fallen off the bandwagon with regards to my principles on this matter.
But have you ever wondered why Coke makes us so happy and there are millions of Coke-addicts around the world? Well simply because Coke gets you high. In spite of its cocaine content having been removed from it, Coke is so potent because according to Technorati:
The first 10 minutes is equivalent to 10 teaspoons of sugar right into your system. Yeah, that equates to 100% of your recommended daily intake. A sudden sugar intake would probably induce vomiting but we don’t because of Coke’s phosphoric acid which acts by numbing our taste receptors thus allowing us keep the drink down.
After 20 minutes, blood sugar levels spike which in turn, results in a surge of nsulin coursing through our system. This causes the liver to work overtime converting any sugar it finds (yeah, there’s a lot of this right now) into fat.
40 minutes on and any trace of caffeine left in the body is completely absorbed. This results in dilation of the pupils and a spike in the blood pressure. The liver reacts to this emergency signal by releasing even more sugar into the bloodstream. Just when you thought the worse was over, all adenosine receptors in your brain short circuit preventing drowsiness.
45 minutes later your body increases the amount of dopamine being produced to stimulate the pleasure centres of the brain. Quite the same way in which heroin and other similar hard drugs work.
After more than 1 hour after ingestion the phosphoric acid which has been having free reign finally binds with calcium, magnesium and zinc in the lower intestine causing an extra boost in metabolism. Then we begin to excrete calcium through our urinary processes which were set off by the high dosage of sugar intake and artificial sweeteners. Caffeine and its diuretic effects manifest forcing us to answer the call of nature and thus removing the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc from our system together with sodium and electrolyte.
After the sugar high comes the sugar crash which could result in irritability or sluggishness or even both. By this time any water to be found in the Coke or in your body has been depleted (through urine) together with nutrients found in the body. The next few hours there will be a caffeine crash and its effects could be amplified if you’re a smoker.
