Heard about the see through concrete? Well, maybe not because it’s fairly new. It’s called the Litracon, or light transmitting concrete, and it was developed in 2001 by a Hungarian architect called Aron Losonczi. I was rather shocked when I heard about it but it won the Leaf Awards in 2006 so I decided to pay their website a visit: http://www.litracon.hu.
The concrete consists of a combination of optical fibres and fine concrete. The website has a more in depth explanation about the concrete but basically, “…the result is not only two materials - glass in concrete - mixed, but a third, new material, which is homogeneous in its inner structure and on its main surfaces as well…”
And the concrete is as strong as normal (boring) concrete as glass fibres do not have a negative effect on the compression strength value of concrete-basically means that load bearing structures can be built on it.
I am sure this would be a fun addition to any building, be it commercial or residential.
