Jumping on the green band wagon, the solar tree made its debut in Venice for the Biennale dell' Architettura. Mixing form and function, the Solar Trees have petals lined with LED bulbs and photovoltaic cells. Which means that in the day time, they absorb solar energy which recharges a battery pack for illumination when night falls.
When the Solar Tree was tested in Vienna late last year, it received rave reviews. Officials agreed that this could be the solution to fighting down carbon emissions and reduce the amount authorities had to pay on electricity bills. According to some studies, street lighting was responsible for about 10 percent of all electricity used in Europe (2006). That would equate to 2,000 billion KWh and equivalent to 2,900 million tonnes of Carbon emissions.
